Computer Lab Open for Business

We were pleased this week to reopen our School of Business computer lab this week to our students after several upgrades to the computers and other equipment. In addition to the work this summer improving wireless access in our building, these upgrades reflect our commitment to providing our students with up-to-date tools and technology during their experience here at La Sierra University.

We have also added ID card access to the lab for students, eliminating the need for a staff member or student worker to be present to allow them in. Special thanks to Eduardo Brugman, eLearning & Technology Coordinator in the School of Business (and soon-to-be father), his staff, and our campus Information Technology Department for their work on all of this over the summer.

Due to these improvements and changes, please observe the following guidelines and requirements when using our computer lab.  

• No food or drinks are allowed at anytime in the Lab as you will be held liable for any damage caused to the equipment.
• Check the Alarm Panel on the right before swiping your card. If the light is red don't open the door for the alarm will sound. 
• Please find Cheryl or Vernell before continuing to enter.
• Tap your ID on the sensor to the right of the Door to enter the lab. Pull the door open quickly and close the door behind you. 
• If your card does not open the door please take your card down to Student Life and ask for Fain and he will help reactivate your card.
• Do not let anyone else in with you as you will be held liable for any damage or missing equipment that they may cause.
• If you are unable to login to the computer(s) please go to MICOL in AMBS HALL for login troubleshooting. We CANNOT solve this problem in the School of Business.
• If the printer is jammed or out of paper, please see Cheryl or Vernell. DO NOT attempt to fix the problem yourself. 
• The lab will be available to you from Sunday thru Friday, there are no posted times, BUT please check to see if there is a class meeting in the lab before entering. 
• When security comes to lock the building down after 9PM, you will be requested to leave.
• Please save your work immediately and do not attempt to reenter the lab after the alarm has been set. 
• If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please come see Cheryl and she will direct you to the appropriate person.

Summer Quarter Courses

Yes friends, summer is nearly upon us, and that means a summer quarter full of learning opportunities in the La Sierra University School of Business.

Note that this list represents possible summer courses, and is not an all-inclusive list of those already planned. Undergraduate Scholarships | Up to $5,000

Scholarships from $500 to $5,000 are now available to qualifying undergraduate students at La Sierra University. Special thanks to Student Financial Services for providing us with the following information.

This application will be used by the Awards and Scholarship Committee to assist in the selection of endowment scholarship recipients. Only Undergraduate Students are eligible to apply. Qualifying students must meet minimum academic and financial aid requirements to be eligible for certain scholarships. The scholarship awards may range from $500 to $5,000 and will be presented at the Awards Ceremony on May 24, 2011, along with awards and scholarships distributed by academic departments. Click Here to Submit an Application. The deadline for this application is March 2, 2011 at 5 pm.

SIFE Presentation Team Tryouts | Jan 28

For the past twenty years, our La Sierra University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team has shown the world what students are truly capable of. Each year, while continuing to develop amazing projects in our local and global community, the team is given the opportunity to share its story. A presentation team is formed to take this story to thousands of professionals and other students through Regional, National, and World Cup levels of competition. Members of the presentation team are given the unique opportunity to engage with executives of the top companies in the world, and represent La Sierra University in a competition process including over 1500 universities.

Join us in the School of Business room #206 this Friday at 1:00. We will be holding auditions open to all La Sierra University students. Just as with the overall team, a student is not required to be a business major to join the SIFE team. Free Tutoring | Econ 341/444

Feeling overwhelmed in your undergraduate managerial stats or operations research class? Well, now you have someone to help!

Matthew Lund will be tutoring again this quarter in the downstairs lobby of the School of Business from 5-6 PM Monday through Thursday and from 11-12 Noon on Fridays. Take advantage of this service today!

If you would like to provide free tutoring services to students in other business courses, or would like to request tutoring in a specific business course, please contact Cheryl Bauman in the School of Business. Additionally, the Learning Support and Testing Center at LSU offers tutoring in a number of other subjects, including the sciences.

Speaker Change | Jan 25 Colloquium

Tonight's Business Colloquium lecturer has changed. We received word that Scott Horton from AntiWar Radio is unable to join us due to a personal matter. In his place we welcome Butler Shaffer, the Irwin R. Buchalter Professor of Law at Southwestern University in Los Angeles.

Professor Shaffer's presentation will take place at the originally scheduled time, tonight, January 25, at 5 p.m., Cossentine Hall 100.

Butler Shaffer holds a law degree from the University of Chicago. He is the author of the following books: "Calculated Chaos: Institutional Threats to Peace and Human Survival" ("institutions are the principle means by which conflict is produced and managed in society"), "In Restraint of Trade: The Business Campaign Against Competition, 1918-1938," "Boundaries of Order," and "The Wizards of Ozymandias."

Following graduation from law school, Professor Shaffer was a labor relations consultant to the Midwest Employers Council in Lincoln, Nebraska, and went on to establish a private law practice in Omaha. He subsequently joined the firm of Nelson, Harding, Marchetti, Leonard & Tate, and then began a career in academia at the University of Nebraska College of Business Administration where he taught courses in business and law. Professor Shaffer has been a member of the Southwestern faculty since 1977.

Last Day to Drop Classes

Congratulations to our soon-to-be graduating MBA students! If you are planning to graduate this June, it is imperative that you complete a Petition for Graduation Form to be signed by your advisor and Dean. It only takes a minute to fill out, and is a great next step towards getting that diploma!

Johnny Cupcakes bakes up sweet success in nontraditional ways

Hear his story (and it’s not about baked goods!) at the School of Business colloquium, Tuesday, Jan. 18, 5 p.m., Cossentine Hall, Room 100. Come hear this intriguing, and very cool story.

Johnny Earle, a.k.a. ‘Johnny Cupcakes,’ determined as a teenager not to follow the 9-to-5 route he’d seen others struggle with. So he took a joke, turned it into a quirky, attention-getting product and without a business plan, startup funds or advertising, created a Web-and-retail enterprise that has garnered millions in revenue. His cheeky, risk-taking success thrives in large part from his ability to slam the door on traditional big-money deals. In 2008 he took the top spot on Business Week’s Young Entrepreneur list and the next year landed on Inc. magazine’s top 500 fastest growing independent businesses.

Major news outlets, including NPR, CNN, the Wall Street Journal and New York Times have featured stories on Johnny Cupcakes, now a chain of three ‘bakeries’ in Los Angeles, Boston and Hull, Mass. Johnny bakes up unique and wildly popular designs for t-shirts, hoodies, shorts and accessories including an iPhone case and displays them in glass ‘bakery’ and refrigerated cases. ‘Nutrition facts’ are posted on the store walls.

Now he’s bringing his story to La Sierra University, as part of his global lecture series, to impart words of wisdom on starting a small business with little or no money, effective use of the Internet, the importance of graphic design and packaging, and tips for approaching business in innovative ways. Winter Quarter Registration Begins!

It is that time of the quarter to sign up for an advising appointment. Registration for Winter Quarter begins today, November 29. Your advisors should be posting their advising appointment sheets outside their office. The advisees of Dr. Prudence Pollard and Ms. Kristine Webster-Poole, please sign up with Cheryl Bauman for the time being. The advisees of Dr. Pollard will be reassigned to another advisor later in December.

 

If you have holds, please clear them ASAP so that you can take advantage of an early registration.

Avoid Late Fees | Note these important dates

Attention Students! Please note the following upcoming deadlines. And special thanks to Esther Kinzer, Director of Student Financial Services, for sending us a reminder.

November 29         First day to register for Winter quarter 2011 classes.

December 15         Financial Clearance Deadline—Winter 2011

                              Register and pay by this date to avoid a $250 late payment fee.

                              To qualify for the 2% discount, the quarter-in-advance payment is due.

December 24         University closes for the holidays until 8 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2011.

January 10            Winter quarter classes begin.

Call Student Financial Services and/or your designated advisor right away to set up an appointment. This is the best way to avoid long lines and sometimes even discover financial aid opportunities you were not aware of.

'Tis the Season for Advising!

Successful Meet the Firms Night

For our students who attended last Thursday night's Meet the Firms event, you made a great impression on the companies. Adjectives like, "focused" and "prepared" were tossed around in the feedback we received and they also said they were impressed by how well-dressed and professional you came across in your interactions. Students like you keep these companies coming back. Word gets around. Jobs are hard to come by, yet we encourage the companies to come out to see the caliber of students we are developing as future leaders to get into the workforce and turn this economy around for the better. Challenges lie ahead, but you are self-motivated, industrious, and creative. This will give you an edge in this competitive market.
