Computer Lab Open for Business

We were pleased this week to reopen our School of Business computer lab this week to our students after several upgrades to the computers and other equipment. In addition to the work this summer improving wireless access in our building, these upgrades reflect our commitment to providing our students with up-to-date tools and technology during their experience here at La Sierra University.

We have also added ID card access to the lab for students, eliminating the need for a staff member or student worker to be present to allow them in. Special thanks to Eduardo Brugman, eLearning & Technology Coordinator in the School of Business (and soon-to-be father), his staff, and our campus Information Technology Department for their work on all of this over the summer.

Due to these improvements and changes, please observe the following guidelines and requirements when using our computer lab.

No food or drinks are allowed at anytime in the Lab as you will be held liable for any damage caused to the equipment.
Check the Alarm Panel on the right before swiping your card. If the light is red don't open the door for the alarm will sound.
Please find Cheryl or Vernell before continuing to enter.
Tap your ID on the sensor to the right of the Door to enter the lab. Pull the door open quickly and close the door behind you.
If your card does not open the door please take your card down to Student Life and ask for Fain and he will help reactivate your card.
Do not let anyone else in with you as you will be held liable for any damage or missing equipment that they may cause.
If you are unable to login to the computer(s) please go to MICOL in AMBS HALL for login troubleshooting. We CANNOT solve this problem in the School of Business.
If the printer is jammed or out of paper, please see Cheryl or Vernell. DO NOT attempt to fix the problem yourself.
The lab will be available to you from Sunday thru Friday, there are no posted times, BUT please check to see if there is a class meeting in the lab before entering.
When security comes to lock the building down after 9PM, you will be requested to leave.
Please save your work immediately and do not attempt to reenter the lab after the alarm has been set.

Top-Rated | United Way Internship

Based on excellent results last Fall, we are pleased to again offer an exciting internship opportunity to our students with United Way. Please see the message below from Dr. James Erickson, the Director of our Center for Philanthropy for more details.

"I want to alert you of a special internship opportunity which would offer four (4) hours of academic credit this fall, but more importantly would provide you with a professional opportunity and corporate experience which would be meaningful to your career preparation and would be impressive on your resume.

The course we are offering, MGMT 696U and MGMT 484U, for MBA students, juniors and seniors will represent an internship practicum through the United Way of the Inland Valleys, and it will include orientation and instruction from Kevin McCarthy, Executive Director of United Way and one of the most respected United Way executives in the nation. I will be coordinating the course for the University and will also provide instruction in philanthropic strategies.

We will be holding a required one-hour orientation session with pizza and soft drinks to be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27, in Room 105 of the School of Business building on campus, and Kevin McCarthy and I will be explaining the course objectives at that time. The United Way orientation for the course will be held the following week, and Kevin will spell out those details at the September 27 meeting. We are expecting a commitment of approximately 10 hours a week to United Way during the fall term.

Students participating in this course will serve as an account executive for United Way and will make telephone calls on industries and businesses. Last fall 13 La Sierra business students, MBA and upper class students, served in this capacity and performed superbly. During their service, they called on decision makers at accounts and negotiated use of best practices, planned internal fund raising campaigns, met with campaign committees, strategized with United Way staff and with local company executives. They made public presentations which were well received, and they advised United Way about social media strategies, finance and accounting and improved internal administrative systems in the process.

2011-2012 Student Mentors | 3 Paid Positions

We are looking for three Junior or Senior students to serve as mentors to four students (each) from Fall to Spring of the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Sophomore Mentoring Program is designed as a pilot test of a potential future program to increase the retention and level of engagement of our Sophomore students. The goals of the program include the following:

Increase student identification, investment, and integration within the major department
Engage sophomores academically and socially with department peers and faculty
Increase opportunities for sophomores to engage in learning opportunities within the major
Support the academic success of the students
Solidify major through career exploration and evaluation of the fit between the chosen major and the student
Provide job shadowing opportunities for sophomores
Increase the persistence and retention of sophomore students
Help sophomore students solidify an academic sense of purpose

As one of three mentors working in this program, you would play a primary role in how these goals are accomplished. Pay is $8.50-9.50 per hour for 25 hours of work per quarter. You can also choose to receive it in the form of a paycheck or a scholarship. And there may be some additional opportunities which arise out of this position based on some of the other special projects we're planning in the School of Business.

Representing two years of work by our SIFE team, developing a project for displaced families in Colombia, was Maria Andrea Mattheus. She spoke tonight on the intensive research needed to plan the implementation of the project, the assessment and feedback tools needed to continuously improve it, and the importance of strong partners and mentors such as renowned business author Linda Pinson.

Last Fall, a team of four students, Lizzie Arouca, Alexandre Schmidt, Vanisara Nicole Anthony, and Courtney Yamanishi, were selected from a field of tough competition in our very first Dean's Challenge of the year. The team was awarded $2,500 for their development of an excellent marketing plan for Turner Development and their 100,000-square-foot center of stores, service establishments, a hotel and restaurants along Riverwalk Parkway. Tonight three members of the team were back to share their experiences and methodology in the in-depth research needed for such a task.

Software developer Mike Matas demos the first full-length interactive book for the iPad -- with clever, swipeable video and graphics and some very cool data visualizations to play with. The book is "Our Choice," Al Gore's sequel to "An Inconvenient Truth." While at Apple, Mike Matas helped write the user interface for the iPhone and iPad. Now with Push Pop Press, he's helping to rewrite the electronic book (from Ted.com).

REVO La Sierra Team 2010

There is nothing better for us than to see our very own students using their knowledge, skill, and abilities to make the world around them a better place. So we are pleased to announce that REVO is back! REVO, short for "revolution," was an amazing way last year for students, faculty and staff, and community members of La Sierra to utilize their talents to raise money for a great cause. Through an art show, concert, and fashion show, this student-led group was able to raise over $24,000 for an orphanage in Rwanda.

This year, REVO La Sierra has decided to pair with an International Justice Missions (IJM). IJM is a human rights agency that seeks to give justice, relief, and support to the victims of slavery, sexual exploitation, and violence. Not only does IJM seek to prosecute those who commit these heinous acts of exploitation, but it seeks to rehabilitate and support the victims of these crimes. Finally, IJM fights to make perpetrators accountable for their actions, as well as change the systems that allow trades like this to prosper in the hope of one day ending human trafficking. We will be focusing on the area of Southeast Asia, where human trafficking, especially the sex trade, is extremely prevalent.

Oakwood University, our sister institution in Huntsville, Alabama, was spared from a direct hit by this tornado outbreak, but power and food shortages have crippled operations on the campus as outlined in the following press release

Given the state of emergency declared by the Governor of Alabama, and due to the uncertainty of the return of power and utilities to the City of Huntsville and to the Oakwood University campus, for the safety and comfort of all concerned, students are released from the remainder of the Spring Semester 2011. They are free to return home, immediately. All pending final exams for the Spring semester have been cancelled, and the faculty will facilitate the calculation of grades. Once the campus returns to normal operations, the student body should contact their instructors concerning final grades.
In light of the fact that the VBC is cancelling currently scheduled events and due to the uncertainty of the restoration of power to the City of Huntsville and the widespread impact to employees and to the University, Oakwood administration has rescheduled Commencement exercises for Memorial Day weekend, May 27 and 28, 2011.

International students at Oakwood University have been particularly affected by this ongoing situation due to transportation challenges and food shortages. Amro Albanna is founder and CEO of Innovation Economy Corporation, a collection of businesses designed to accelerate the creation and monetization of entrepreneurship. Albanna created Innovation Economy Corporation out of a desire to better facilitate the challenging and chaotic entrepreneurial path that he knows so well.

Over the course of his career, Albanna has founded multiple startup-technology companies that cover a diverse array of innovations including, an application service provider (ASP), -- the forerunner to global positioning systems (GPS) and radio frequency identification technology (RFID)-- full-motion video game simulators, and applications for entomology and diagnostic nanotechnology research, to name a few. Focus on what you can control right now, and right now that is what to do with your time this week. You know that outline of key study items you have been planning to make? Start right now. The important question you need to ask your professor? Send that e-mail! Using the computer lab to type that paper? I can think of better time than when it's crowded tomorrow...

Whether its a difficult exam, a paper, a project, or all at once, our faculty and staff know you can do it. Talk to one of us if you need that extra push. And when you've turned it all in, knowing you did your best, when should you celebrate? Well, maybe you should take a much needed nap first.

Communication Manager-Adventist Health System

Adventist Health System (AHS) is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Communications Manager position to work with our hospitals in the Multistate Division (MSD). This position will be based at Winter Park, FL and will travel to our facilities up to 25% of the time.

Professor Shaffer's presentation will take place at the originally scheduled time, tonight, January 25, at 5 p.m., Cossentine Hall 100.

Butler Shaffer holds a law degree from the University of Chicago. He is the author of the following books: "Calculated Chaos: Institutional Threats to Peace and Human Survival" ("institutions are the principle means by which conflict is produced and managed in society"), "In Restraint of Trade: The Business Campaign Against Competition, 1918-1938," "Boundaries of Order," and "The Wizards of Ozymandias."

Following graduation from law school, Professor Shaffer was a labor relations consultant to the Midwest Employers Council in Lincoln, Nebraska, and went on to establish a private law practice in Omaha. He subsequently joined the firm of Nelson, Harding, Marchetti, Leonard & Tate, and then began a career in academia at the University of Nebraska College of Business Administration where he taught courses in business and law. Professor Shaffer has been a member of the Southwestern faculty since 1977.

Prediction Strategy in South Korea

Keeping the La Sierra University School of Business on the cutting edge of economic and political theory, Dr. Hana Oh is in Korea this month, delivering a presentation on the advancement of prediction strategy. Dr. Oh is the Assistant Director of the Transnational Research Consortium, a non-profit formed by leaders from the La Sierra University School of Business, the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University and the School of Politics and Economics at Claremont Graduate University. The Consortium enables its participants to better serve their students by conducting state-of-the-art research, by providing curriculum and project expertise, and by providing the outcome of research to the business and policy communities. In this way, the Consortium's joint intellectual resources provide research capabilities which are superior to the services which could be provided by any participant acting alone.

Dr. Oh, who is also teaching an undergraduate Macro-Economics course at La Sierra University this quarter, will be sharing research and analysis on the latest developments in social science theories and methodologies that are used for computational simulation, strategy building, and prediction of business, economics, politics, and conflict. In an e-mail update this week, Dr. Oh explained that she was invited to speak at the South Korea Agency for Defense Developement as they are interested in not only analysis of conflict when it occurs, but the bigger picture - the analysis and prediciton of decision making processes before, during, and after conflict - to show how methods and theories in economics and politics can be used for conflict prediction and strategy.

United Way’s First Student Internships

The benefit worked both ways this fall quarter, for students who served as first-ever interns at the United Way of the Inland Valleys, and for the agency which drew upon their recommendations.

Twelve La Sierra University graduate and undergraduate business students served as account executives for the Riverside-based United Way office, in a practicum that began on Sept. 4 and ended with a wrap-up session about their experiences on Dec. 13. Their internships were in fulfillment of a Practicum in Management course at La Sierra’s School of Business.

It was the first time the United Way in Riverside had hosted student interns and the experience proved a positive one for the organization. “It was Jim Erickson’s [course instructor] idea and we loved it. We hope the students found it worthwhile,” said Kevin McCarthy, president and chief executive officer of the United Way of the Inland Valleys. The students’ impact was “huge” in broadening the agency’s reach to potential donors. The organization is analyzing the students’ recommendations, he said.

After undergoing a two-day training course that focused on public speaking, financial functions of the agency, confidentiality issues and campaign processes, the students each worked about 10 hours a week handling various responsibilities. They made calls to prospective donor organizations and gave presentations to employees at businesses, schools and hospitals on the benefits of contributing to the agency. They collected and verified pledge amounts and interacted with the agency’s finance department.

La Sierra Master of Business Administration student Edgar Rodriguez developed real-world experience giving presentations to increasingly large groups, ending with a pitch to 100 school teachers. While he had given many class presentations as a student, this was something different and provided valuable experience. “I came out feeling I had actually learned something,” said the future marketing executive. Rodriguez’s career goal is to lead a marketing department within the international automotive industry.

Rodriguez’s tasks at United Way included creating Excel spreadsheets. One involved a 20-hour project that breaks down all the funding the agency receives to show regions that provide the most donations or to show areas where representatives are giving more presentations.

During his practicum, Rodriguez was impacted by the sincerity of the United Way staff. His supervisor shared personal stories and reasons for working with the agency. “You feel people there care and whatever they’re doing is going to make a difference,” he said.

Rodriguez recommended the agency set up a sign-in system detailing work projects and availability so that supervisors can ask interns and others for help during ‘down’ time.

Erickson, who is also director of La Sierra’s Center for Philanthropy and a well-known regional fundraiser, was impressed with the students’ work and views they were able to provide the United Way. “I was so proud of them,” he said. “They achieved more than I thought and they had such insight and perspectives.” The practicum not only gave the students key experience for their resumes, “more importantly, they gave back to the community in a significant way,” Erickson said.

New Biz School Site Dedication

As the sun faded into a purple gray sky Dec. 9, a crowd of about 200 La Sierra University leaders, city dignitaries, students, staff and guests gathered on the university’s fountain plaza to celebrate a milestone event in the life of the campus.

They came to dedicate the site of La Sierra’s next landmark facility named in honor of two couples whose philanthropic generosity is foundational in bringing a long-held dream to fruition. (Click here for a slideshow of the dedication ceremony:http://www.lasierra.edu/uploads/pics/sbevent2010/)

The university is aiming to move its burgeoning business programs from their current, 42-year-old structure into the Zapara School of Business and Rubin Hall, more than 60,000-square-feet of light, airy, high-tech space that will face Riverwalk Parkway, large enough to accommodate 750 students and faculty offices. The blueprint includes a full service conference center for business and regional events.

During Thursday’s ceremony, La Sierra University President Randal Wisbey and School of Business Dean John Thomas delivered words of recognition and appreciation for the significant contributions of La Sierra alums Thomas and Violet Zapara, founders of a successful occupational first aid and safety services firm, and Riverside/Los Angeles developer Mark Rubin and his wife, Pam.

Wisbey cited the couples’ substantive contributions to various educational causes around the region and thanked them for their confidence in La Sierra University. “The Zaparas have given significant support to projects at La Sierra University in the past. This significant new commitment by Thomas and Violet demonstrates again their strong belief in the School of Business’s future,” Wisbey said. “Pam and Mark Rubin are showing similar belief in how La Sierra University’s plans will make a strong impact on communities in the Inland Empire.”

“Tom and Violet, Pam and Mark, please know how incredibly grateful we are that the beautiful new building that will serve generations of students will bear your names,” continued Wisbey. “This will be an extraordinary facility, not only providing a home for our dynamic and growing school, but also a conference center that will help to meet the growing demand for meeting space in western Riverside.”

“For decades, Tom and Vi have been envisioning an exciting future for Seventh-day Adventist education. They’ve dreamed of a future marked by a combination of spiritual vitality, openness and academic excellence,” Thomas said during his remarks. “Now we celebrate their dreams for the church they love, with a school of business where their entrepreneurial spirits and creativity will be honored and emulated.”

The Rubins’ contribution reflects their vision of Riverside as “a place where higher education flourishes,” Thomas continued. “Now we celebrate their dreams for the community to which they’ve given so much, with a business building where that community will be enriched by scholarship, teaching and service.”

Business students Ryan Foss and Amanda Oberg talked about the significance of the new school from their perspectives. Foss said the contributions and example of the Zaparas and the Rubins empower La Sierra’s students.

The philanthropists’ contributions display a confidence in the university’s students they typically don’t receive at such a young and inexperienced age, Oberg said. “I’d like to thank both the Zaparas and the Rubins for believing in us as students,” she said. “For the students coming up in our future, how cool is this to call this our home?”

Several governmental officials and representatives attended the site dedication ceremony including Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge and City Councilman Steve Adams.

“In my tenure as mayor I’ve seen the transformation of this campus,” Loveridge said. “We’re celebrating people who care about this place. We’re here to thank the Zaparas and the Rubins for what their contributions represent.” He cited the transformative architecture and technology the new building will employ and said the facility will stand as a “marker of La Sierra University’s coming of age.”

The ceremony closed with the Rubins and the Zaparas cutting a ceremonial ribbon to unveil a new sign for Rubin Hall and the Zapara School of Business.

“We feel La Sierra University does a fantastic job in providing quality education,” Mark Rubin said. “Pam and I greatly support education in general and education in the Riverside area specifically. We feel the new School of Business will enhance the community at large and create more economic development for the area. The work that Dr. Wisbey and his predecessor, Dr. Geraty have done will only get better with this new school.”

The Rubins have developed homes, shopping centers and offices in the Riverside area, including a townhouse complex in downtown Riverside. Their firm, Regional Properties Inc., is currently constructing a six-story office building near the 91 Freeway in Riverside. In addition to the numerous board positions the Rubins hold with community and regional organizations, Mark Rubin also serves as chairman of La Sierra University’s Foundation Board.

The Zaparas started their company, Zee Medical Inc. in 1952 in their home garage. They grew the startup over three decades to ultimately serve more than 400,000 manufacturing plants, construction companies, offices and other businesses until its acquisition by another firm. They back their vision for the potential of Adventist education through philanthropic support.

The decision to contribute to the new business school project “was easy …when you see what’s going on here,” Thomas Zapara said. “You want to support things like this.”

Hello All,

Some of you may know me well, others may not, but today who I am is not what's important. My name is Logan Dirksen and I apologize for the late notice of this request, but this plan has developed literally overnight in light of recent events. Wednesday (12/8/10) Tom C. Cooper, my grandfather and a renowned landscape photographer who spent many years with Arizona Highways, passed away in Atlanta, Georgia. In order to attempt to preserve his legacy as a passionate photographer, I am establishing an endowment fund in his honor to assist aspiring photographers in achieving their educational and professional goals. I will need to raise at least $5,000 to initially fund the endowment and will be attempting to get businesses to match all personal donations to further solidify the fund. With the initial amount I raise, I will purchase a long term security, such as an annuity, to make the fund self-sustainable in the long run.

I have decided that the best way to start the fund raising effort is to ask for sponsors for a 5K I will now be running in his honor and to raise awareness of the benefits of healthy living, as his death was most likely related to heart failure. I am scheduled to run this, my very first 5K (or race for that matter), on Sunday December 12 at 1:30 PM in Malibu. However, this is no ordinary 5K I will be participating in. The Spartan
Race is an all-out gauntlet which will test my strength, endurance, perseverance and mental fortitude at a time when I am already being tested from all sides. I have attached a few videos and links below to better

Kristine Webster, assistant professor in the School of Business, continues to recover from her injuries suffered in an auto accident slightly more than a week ago. She has been relocated to the Tom and Vi Zapara Rehabilitation Pavilion, Room 1503, on Loma Linda University Medical Center's East Campus. She is happy to have visitors at this time. Her family and the School of Business community wants to thank everyone for their prayers and support for Kristine and her family through this difficult time.

The Financial Service Associate (FSA) position is a sales position with The Prudential Insurance Company of America selling insurance and financial services. It is important that Financial Service Associates be capable of mastering the complexities of the job, continually learning new products, information, and approaches. As our representative, the FSA must have a full understanding of all our products and be able to recommend to customers the appropriate solutions that are in the best interest of the customer. The end result of the FSA’s work is to develop long-term relationships between us and the policyholder that will impact the personal welfare of many people.

The FSA’s general duties include the responsibility to:

Prospect for clients, develop insurance and investment programs and make sales presentations regularly for a broad range of life and non-life insurance contracts and financial products and services sold by Prudential Financial companies.
Propose insurance and investment products most suitable to the applicant’s needs and ability to pay.
Make the necessary adjustments in the policyholder’s portfolio in light of changes in the policyholder’s needs. Although many transactions are handled by the Customer Service Office, an FSA should understand how to provide services, such as processing loans, surrenders, changes in beneficiary, claims, policy options, and the like, as well as being able to explain to customers the effect of these transactions.
Maintain in force the existing insurance and investments products of clients, secure the reinstatement of insurance that has lapsed, and perform all the duties incident to the care and conservation of the business assigned by Prudential. This may apply to all policies, whether or not the insurance was originally sold by the FSA.
Maintain records of account, and render when required, on forms provided by Prudential, a report of all business transacted and complete accounting of all monies received on behalf of Prudential Financial companies.
Conform to and abide by the procedures, rules and requirements of Prudential Financial companies and the state or states where the FSA operates.
